One of KHFS's first projects were the twenty honorariums awarded to native Hawaiian cultural practitioners at the annual Kilauea Cultural Festival in 2002 through 2003. KHF supports the recognition of many community-based practitioners on the island of Hawai'i who for many years have donated their time, expertise and aloha to perpetuate Hawaiian cultural practices through demonstrations at the festivals.
Through our partnership with the Kilauea Cultural Festival Committee, KHF was able to bring awareness to gathering coordinators to organize their own nonprofit organization to continue to recognize the talent within their community. As a result, fund development strategies in their Friends of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park are successfully sustaining future gatherings and building quality Hawaiian culture and arts programs for residents and visitors.
Grants for honorariums were from the Pu'a Foundation
and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
